GIS 3 - advanced level
Keywords

About course
GIS 3 – Advanced Level is an intensive training program designed for users who are already comfortable working in a GIS environment and wish to expand their expertise in advanced raster analysis, spatial modeling, and the development of field data collection applications. Participants will learn methods for raster data classification, route modeling, and analyses using a Digital Terrain Model (DTM). They will also learn how to create mobile applications in ArcGIS for field data collection and geosurveys. The final module is devoted to 3D modeling, covering point cloud processing, texturing, the creation of three-dimensional building models, and visibility analysis.
Course Objectives
- Develop skills in working with raster data to effectively analyze spatial phenomena such as land cover and route planning while considering terrain conditions.
- Understand the importance of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) for environmental and spatial analyses, particularly in the context of investment planning, terrain exposure assessment, slope analysis, and solar radiation potential.
- Prepare participants to independently design field applications that enable rapid and standardized data collection, which is essential for inventories, social research, and spatial analyses.
- Introduce participants to working with 3D data, enabling them to create spatial models and 3D visualizations that support decision-making processes, visibility analyses, urban planning, and project presentations.
- Build the ability to integrate spatial data and mobile technologies to conduct research and spatial analyses more effectively and to present results in a visually engaging and substantively meaningful way.
Learning outcomes

Program
Raster Analysis
In this module, participaants will explore advanced methods of raster data analysis, which form the foundation of many environmental and spatial analyses. The first part focuses on raster classification, where participants will learn how to identify different land cover types and other phenomena based on raster data and assign them to appropriate classes, enabling further interpretation and analysis. Such analyses are widely used in infrastructure planning, field logistics, and emergency management applications.
Digital Terrain Model (DTM)
This module introduces participants to working with the Digital Terrain Model (DTM), a digital representation of the Earth's surface topography. Participants will learn about the types and characteristics of DTM data and how to interpret them. In the practical part, they will use DTM data to perform slope and solar exposure analyses, which are widely applied in spatial planning, risk assessment, and site selection for investments.
The second part of the module focuses on route modeling based on terrain conditions. Participants will learn how to determine the most suitable routes for movement across a landscape, taking into account natural obstacles, terrain slope, and preferred directions of travel.
ArcGIS Capture and ArcGIS Survey Applications
In this module, participants will learn how to create applications for collecting spatial data in the field using ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123. They will learn how to design forms and configure geosurveys that enable the rapid and organized collection of data from users, residents, or other stakeholders. The module demonstrates how GIS tools can be applied in practical field operations, data collection campaigns, and public consultation processes.
3D Modeling and Point Cloud Processing
In this module, participants will gain a practical introduction to working with 3D data in a GIS environment. They will learn how to create 3D models of objects, including buildings, and apply textures to produce realistic spatial visualizations. Participants will also use visibility analysis to assess what can be seen from a selected location, for example in the context of view planning, surveillance, or security applications.
The module also includes an introduction to point cloud processing as a source of highly accurate 3D spatial data, enabling participants to work with advanced datasets for modeling, analysis, and visualization purposes.a
