About course

The GIS 2 – Intermediate Level course is designed for participants who have a basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and wish to expand their skills by learning more advanced spatial analysis techniques. Participants will learn how to use GIS tools to support decision-making processes, process spatial data, work with raster and vector layers (including drawing and editing), and perform more complex spatial analyses. The course also covers spatial statistics and data integration using Microsoft Excel.

The course is practice-oriented – participants will work with real-world data and practical examples, using up-to-date GIS tools and selected plugins.

Course objectives:

  • Developing skills in analysing spatial distribution and spatial relationships.
  • Expanding knowledge of data management tools and operations in the attribute table.
  • Learning how to retrieve data based on spatial relationships.
  • Applying multi-criteria decision-making methods.
  • Introduction to basic statistical analyses using Microsoft Excel.
  • Developing skills in filtering linear data and working with raster layers (georeferencing).
  • Using drawing tools and the APP 2 plugin.
  • Conducting network analyses and creating accessibility buffers.

Program

  • Spatial Data Analysis and Decision Support

    In the module dedicated to spatial data analysis and decision support, participants will learn how to use GIS tools to identify and interpret relationships occurring in geographic space. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to present spatial relationships through clear and accessible visualizations, such as thematic maps.

    Participants will also learn practical techniques for managing spatial data. They will perform operations in the attribute table, such as filtering, sorting, and editing data, as well as learn how to obtain new information based on spatial relationships between objects – for example, by identifying objects located within a specified distance of other objects or contained within specific boundaries.

  • GIS in Spatial Analysis

    During this module, participants will explore two key topics: raster georeferencing and the principles of multi-criteria analysis. The module prepares participants to work effectively with various types of spatial data.

    The first part of the module will focus on assigning coordinates to raster data, such as scanned local spatial development plans, enabling their further use in GIS analyses. In the second part, participants will learn how to select land parcels based on selected attribute and spatial criteria.

  • GIS in Spatial Planning

    In this module, participants will learn how to apply GIS tools in spatial planning. They will learn how to use drawing tools to create and edit spatial features, such as lines, points, and polygons, in accordance with design requirements.

    Participants will also explore the capabilities of the APP 2 plugin, used, among other things, for planning analyses and generating data in accordance with the requirements of planning documents. The module provides practical skills useful in the preparation of spatial planning documents.

  • Network Analysis, Generalization and Geocoding

    This module focuses on advanced spatial analysis techniques useful for assessing accessibility, location, and the distribution of phenomena. Participants will learn how to geocode address data by assigning spatial locations to them, enabling further analysis. They will also explore methods for creating aggregation grids and cluster maps, which help identify patterns of data concentration and distribution.

    An important part of the module will be network analysis, including route planning and the creation of accessibility buffers. These techniques can be applied, among other things, to transport planning, service location, and analysing access to infrastructure facilities.

dr Justyna Kamila Wieczerzak jest adiunktką na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Gdańskiej, gdzie prowadzi działalność naukowo-dydaktyczną w zakresie planowania przestrzennego i Systemów Informacji Geograficznej (GIS). Stopień doktora nauk społecznych w dyscyplinie geografia społeczno-ekonomiczna i gospodarka przestrzenna uzyskała na Uniwersytecie Gdańskim, broniąc rozprawy dotyczącej wykorzystania potencjałów rozwojowych w Obszarze Metropolitalnym Gdańsk Gdynia Sopot. Jest główną projektantką w Biurze Rozwoju Gdańska (BRG), gdzie uczestniczy w opracowaniu dokumentów planistycznych na poziomie miejskim, w tym planu ogólnego jako współkoordynatorka, i miejscowych planów zagospodarowania przestrzennego. W swojej pracy łączy wiedzę akademicką z praktyką urbanistyczną, koncentrując się na integracji analiz przestrzennych z politykami publicznymi. Pełni również funkcję wiceprezeski Towarzystwa Urbanistów Polskich, Oddział Gdańsk.

Weronika Mazurkiewicz

dr inż. arch. Weronika Mazurkiewicz Adiunkt na Wydziale Architektury w Katedrze Planowania Przestrzennego na Politechnice Gdańskiej oraz czynna architekt i urbanista. Od 2018 roku jest członkinią Zarządu Towarzystwa Urbanistów Polskich oraz stowarzyszenia AESOP (Thematic Group for Public Spaces and Urban Cultures). Od listopada 2021 roku jest Prezeską Gdańskiego oddziału Towarzystwa Urbanistów Polskich, gdzie jest inicjatorką i organizatorką „Spotkań Filmowych z Miastem” oraz stara się propagować ideę elastycznego planowania opartego na masterplanach. Od 2024 roku członkini Inicjatywy Miasto ora Digital Architectural Lab na Politechnice Gdańskiej. Od 2024 roku Radna Dzielnicy Strzyża w Gdańsku.

The training will take place in room 402c, located on the fifth floor of the Main Building of Gdańsk University of Technology. The elevator goes up to the fourth floor, while the final section leading to the room requires the use of a platform installed next to the stairs.An induction loop is available for people who are hard of hearing; however, its use must be requested in advance.The building is not fully accessible – we do not provide interpretation into Polish Sign Language or materials in alternative formats such as Braille or easy-to-read text. There are also no tactile or high-contrast markings to assist people who are blind or have low vision.
