About course

This course focuses on financial evaluation of investment projects and decision-making under uncertainty. Participants will learn key methods and tools used in investment performance analysis, including indicators such as NPV, IRR, and payback period.

The course places particular emphasis on developing analytical skills and practical application of acquired knowledge. Participants learn to evaluate investment projects taking into account risk, market variables, and various decision-making scenarios, using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, among other tools.

The course prepares students for independent analysis and interpretation of financial results, as well as informed investment decision-making. It also develops the ability to critically assess the impact of decisions regarding project structure and financing on enterprise value.

The course aims to provide participants with knowledge and develop practical skills in the financial evaluation of investment projects. Participants will acquire the ability to apply key analytical methods, interpret financial indicators, and assess investment profitability under various market conditions.

The course aims to prepare them for independent investment decision-making, taking into account risk and long-term performance, as well as for the practical use of financial tools in project analysis and management. Another important element is the development of critical thinking in the context of the impact of investment decisions on financial results and the value of the company.

The course duration: is 10 hours, including 5 hours delivered as webinars.

Learning outcomes

  • The participant knows the definition of an investment, its objectives and basic classifications, and understands the differences between CAPEX and OPEX and the main methods for assessing the profitability of an investment.
  • The participant is able to classify an investment project and calculate basic performance measures and, on this basis, propose an investment decision.
  • The participant understands the structure of operating cash flows, the role of depreciation, the importance of net working capital and capital expenditures in the analysis of investment projects.
  • The participant understands the principles of using scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, break-even points and operating leverage in project risk assessment.
  • The participant is able to conduct scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis, determine selected project profitability thresholds and assess the impact of changes in sales and cost structure on the project's financial result.
  • The participant knows the essence of the discount rate and its relationship with the cost of capital.
  • The participant is able to calculate WACC and use it in investment evaluation.
  • The participant knows the principles of capital budgeting and understands the importance of aligning investment projects with the company's strategy.
  • The participant is able to select investment projects in conditions of limited capital and assess their compliance with the financial capabilities and strategic goals of the enterprise.

Program

  • Module 1 introduces participants to the essence of corporate investments, their strategic goals and basic classifications, and discusses key methods for assessing investment profitability and their application in decision-making practice.

  • Module 2 introduces participants to the principles of identifying and estimating investment project cash flows from an incremental perspective.

  • Module 3 discusses tools for assessing the impact of changes in key assumptions on project outcomes, including scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, break-even points, and operating leverage.

  • Participants learn about the construction of the discount rate based on the risk-free rate, risk premiums and capital structure, and learn how to calculate the WACC.

  • Module 5 presents capital budgeting as a process for selecting investment projects in resource-constrained environments. It also discusses the place of investment projects within the overall corporate strategy.

Instructors

dr Błażej Kochański

Błażej Kochański is an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics and Econometrics at the Faculty of Management and Economics of the Gdańsk University of Technology and an expert in banking risk. He has worked for banks in Poland and Europe as a risk specialist, head of planning and analysis, member of the management board for risk, member of the supervisory board, and management consultant. He has built numerous predictive models supporting risk management, successfully managed loan portfolios, and developed effective risk management strategies for retail clients. Having joined the academic world, he is ready to share his experience, knowledge, and insights through expert collaboration, teaching, and scientific publications.

dr Katarzyna Kubiszewska

Katarzyna Kubiszewska has been working in the Department of Finance since 2008, teaching finance and banking. Her research interests include the transformation of banking systems in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the financing of the cultural sector. Her publications cover the social sciences within the discipline of economics and finance. Since 2019, she has collaborated with journals such as Economic Research-Ekonomska Istrazivanja, SAGE Open, AUSTRALIAN ECONOMIC PAPERS, Journal of International Financial Markets Institutions & Money, and International Social Science Journal as an article reviewer. Since 2022, she has been an active tutor providing academic and developmental tutoring for students.
